Eltham 1894: London Sheet 120.2 (Old O.S. Maps of London)
by John Kennett
Detailed map of Eltham; London sheet 120 Introduction by John Kennett Stretching from Leyland Road at Lewisham eastward to Eltham Green and a little beyond, and northward to Kidbrooke station. This is an area with several streets being developed on the west side of the map, where the map fringes Blackheath Park and Lewisham; also near St Peter's church on The Avenue. The area around Eltham Green is largely rural. However we have extended coverage of the 1894 version by including part of Kent Sheet 8.01 on the reverse. This takes coverage to the centre of Eltham village, with St John's church, Court Yard, Eltham Court and the remains of Eltham Palace, and also Well Hall station.

Eltham Palace
by John Priestly
The author, John Priestley, was stationed at Eltham Palace when the army were there during the fifties/sixties and so began his lifelong fascination with it. This book isn't the usual guidebook of what you will see now, with a few historical facts thrown in, it's a detailed history tracing its roots from medieval and Tudor times to the present day. For anyone interested in Eltham's part in our history, with details of court life, foreign royal and ambassadorial visitors, tournaments and festivals, this book is a must.

Eltham Palace (English Heritage Guidebook)
by Michael Turner
From the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries Eltham palace was an important royal palace, a favoured residence where successive monarchs spent Christmas and hunted in the surrounding park. Edward IV built the magnificent Great Hall which survives today, with its soaring hammerbeam roof and oriel windows. In 1933 the site was leased to Stephen Courtauld, who constructed a modern house incorporating the Great Hall. The house was lavishly decorated in a variety of styles, reflecting the influence of Art Deco and contemporary ocean liners, as well as incorporating historical and classical motifs. This souvenir guide does full justice to the medieval remains, the stunning Courtauld interiors and the delightful gardens, also laid out in the 1930s. The Courtaulds were prominent figures in the worlds of society and the arts, as well as pursuing adventurous leisure activities; the text by Michael Turner draws on new research to shed light on their glamorous if brief occupation of Eltham.

Eltham: a Pictorial History
by John Kennett
John Kennett is a well known local historian, famed for his fascinating lectures and walks of the area. This book doesn't disappoint. A vivid, readable history of Eltham from its Roman beginnings to current day (written in 1995), well illustrated with old photos and drawings. Definitely one for the "Did it really look like that!" to the "Oh, I remember that!"
