I am looking for any information, family or old friends of a Mr Richard Stone who lived in Eltham, Kent above a dry cleaners.
I do not have any information except for approximate dates.
Richard Stone was roughly 18 -19 in 1987 and passed away several years later in the 1990’s of a drug overdoes. I understand that he did not keep in touch with his family, but again I may be wrong.
I thought he would have been layed to rest in Eltham/Falconwood crematorium but I have found this is not the case.
I urge anyone with any information to please contact me on zlquick@hotmail.com
Thanks

I know that New Eltham was once called Pope Street, but from census returns it appears that Foots Cray Road was also, originally, called Pope Street. Could anyone kindly confirm my deduction or put me straight if I am wrong.

The SHALLESS family, 1930s - 1960s.
Hi. Can anyone recall a Dorothy SHALLESS living at 76 Eltham Road, Lee up until the 1960s - possibly later? Dorothy was connected to the SHALLESS family who owned the Tobacconists on Well Hall Road, the subject of another of my posts.
I am hoping someone can put me in touch with a living relative (or accquaintance) of Dorothy Shalless as they may be able to shed light on what became of my grandfather Joseph Charles HOWARD of 33 Blunts Road who passed away in January 1966. Joseph married his life-long partner Alice Yvonne (Von) just six months earlier in June 1965 and, basically, I would just like to know if anyone remembers him and if there are any photos anywhere.
Hoping someone can help - Tel: 01472 220817. With thanks. Pete

Well Hall Road - Tobacconist 1930s.
Hi. Can anyone recall or suggest where the Tobacconist owned by the SHALLESS family might have been in the 1930s please?
I have found reference to it occupying both numbers 2 and 10 Well Hall Road in 1936 and '37 and I would like to know if either of these buildings exist today or if they were demolished and rebuilt. Also, can anyone explain the apparent number change or confirm this to be an error with the shop always being on the same premises?
I have recently found what might have been the same shop, again occupying number 2 Well Hall Road but perhaps taken over and owned by WILCOX Newsagents and Tobacconists in the 1960s. The Wilcox family also had a shop on the High Street so this request should not be confused with that.
My Mother lived in the flat above with her father (Joseph Howard and his partner, known as Von) in the 1930s. Joseph and Von later moved to 33 Blunts Road where they lived until the mid to late 1960s.
If anyone can relate to any of the above, please get in touch, either on here or Tel: 01472 220817. With thanks, Pete

In the mid sixties I got posted to Eltham as a young PC and liked the people and the area so much that when I got married I moved here. Over the years I acquired quite a lot of local knowledge about the place but there is one thing that puzzles me. Does anyone have any knowledge of a brick built bridge, demolished in the 60s, that crossed the railway line midway between the footbridge at King John's Walk and the Dutch House by the side of the Sidcup Road. This area has now been planted over with trees but in those days it was all grass, so much so that a light aircraft made a successful forced landing on it despite it being sloped. Anybody help?

I was born in Wales but grew up in south-east London for the remainder of my life todate. I think Eltham and New Eltham is lovely and I love the town. So far it has been a huge disappointment to me that I never lived or worked in the town because of its leafy, tranquil ambience. I am old enough to recall enjoying movies in the old Astoria cinema; and the Eltham Hill Gaumont cinema before it was converted into a bingo hall.
For the past four/five years I been drinking in the New Eltham Social Club on either a Friday or Saturday evening. This particular club is friendly with a great atmosphere and offers great music to great bands. The club is a credit to the town.
With all best wishes to [New] Eltham!

Is anyone in contact with Sandra (Mitchell) who lived at No.71 and Margaret O'Brien who lived at No.79? Both went to Eltham Hill Girls Grammar School in the fifties. Would appreciate hearing from you as I would like to get in touch with them.

I am located in France so its impossible to carry out the task myself at the present time, but are there any enthusiastic people out there who carry out photography as a hobby. I need photographs of graves numbers 6C80; 8C333A; 8C67 all of which are in Eltham Parish Churchyard. I believe the graves are unmarked but Section C appears to be behind the Church as you enter the Churchyard through the Lychgate in Well Hall Road. I would also like to obtain photos of the graves for Mary Matilda R. Barnes (born/died 1893) and her twin sister Emma Elizabeth Barnes (born/died 1893) but I do not have the grave numbers and don't know if they have headstones. In anticipation of a positive response, thank you so much for your kindness and help

Does anyone recall "Messent, Undertaker, Woolwich" - I am researching my Family Tree and amongst a pile of old photographs I've been given, I have discovered a card which indicates that Messent carried out the funeral of my great aunt who was named Mary Matilda R. Barnes who died aged 8 months in 1893. Mary had a twin sister, Emma Elizabeth Barnes, who died the same year. Both are buried in Eltham Parish Church but I do not know the location of the graves. If anyone knows where they are buried and can obtain a picture and email to me (I'm in France) I would be so grateful. Thank you

I used to live in Kidbrooke and from 1955 till 1960 I attended Westhorne Manor Secondary School in Nesbit Road, Eltham: I was a prefect and played goalkeeper for the school team. I obviously lost touch with my classmates over the years' despite keeping in touch with some of them for two/three years' after leaving school. However, since I have been donating blood for the past 40 years', I occasionally meet a former attendee (from the year lower than me) who is a nurse working for the NBS at the donor sessions which is held three times per year.
Ever since the mid-1950s, I have always had a soft spot for Eltham (and New Eltham) because of its tranquil ambience. I also recall with fondness watching films in the Astoria and Eltham Hill Gaumont cinemas prior to closure.

ELTHAM 1943 - WERE YOU THERE? ITV series ‘The Way We Were’ appeals for archive film ‘stars’ captured on film at NATIONAL FIRE SERVICE events during the war in Eltham. It looks as though it was a highlight of the war for many children in Eltham. The special occasion in 1943 was a Christmas Party held at the Marlborough Unit, Eltham for the children of National Fire Service firemen and caught on film by local amateur cameraman and volunteer fire officer, Arthur Green. We understand that the Marlborough Unit venue after the war became the Sidcup Road School and then the Wyborne Junior School Annexe.
A second film, also taken by Arthur Green in 1943 features the National Fire Service Sports Day and Gala at Avery Hill, College, Eltham. Arthur Green also captured on film a ‘day in the life’ of the Volunteer Fire Officers who were based at Deansfield School during the war – the footage show the training and dedication of these volunteers.
TV researchers are keen to speak to anyone who might have attended the Christmas party, the events at Avery Hill or know of someone who was a Volunteer Firefighter based at Deansfield School during the war.
‘The Way We Were’ is a popular social history series in production for transmission on London and Anglia ITV starting April 2007.

I've just heard that the local family butchers (M & R Butchers) in Avery Hill parade is having to close because the Council has put up the rent so much. This is terrible - Eltham needs small shops to keep its community spirit alive. If you agree, email your local councillor - you can get their contact details from the Greenwich Council website.

I've been trying to find information about the team etc but have drawn a blank: if anyone could point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. Dad lived in Meadowside until he and Mum (Pauline Hodgson, also from Meadowside)got married in 1960 but his (Daphne, Thomas and May Penfold) and Mum's (Molly, Graham and Kenny Pearson) families carried on in that road until the 1980s. It was a secondary school and named after General Gordon of Khartoum. My partner and I are thinking of moving to the area, but we don't know anyone who lives in New Eltham and we want to know a bit more about it.
We had a drive round at the weekend and it seemed very nice, but there don't seem to be many pubs/restaurants. Are there any hidden away that we didn't spot, or do you have to go back into Eltham for this sort of thing?
We looked at one particular house near the Conservative club and someone said they have loud karaoke on Saturday nights - is this right? We were concerned this may affect buying a house in that road.

I am looking for Jean Rowena Page, born 30th November 1933 to Ivy (nee Darton) and Stanley Page. Jean was the younger of two daughters, her elder sister being Doreen.
Jean met my uncle, Brian Barnes, at age 14 years whilst they both attended Gordon School in Grangehill Road, Eltham and they fell in love.
When Brian was told he was to be posted overseas with the army Jean was desperate to have a reminder of him should the inevitable happen and he be killed. They decided to have a child. However, Jean's parents on discovering the pregnancy - banished Brian from ever seeing Jean again. He never knew what happened after that. The family who had lived in Eltham moved to East Ham in 1952. Any child would have been born in 1953.
Brian, now in his 70's would dearly love to find Jean and wants to know if he has a son or daughter. I to would like to find her as she is the god mother I have never known.
Jean was badly burned in a fire at home whilst getting ready to be bridesmaid at her sister Doreen's wedding. This was during 1952 whilst they were living in Eltham. Doreen married Kenneth Stanley.
It would be great if you could find Jean or any living relations.
Thank you

Hi, anyone know Susanne Solomon (or the Solomon family). Susanne lived in Mottingham with her parents in the 1970's and was born around 1955. Expect she's married now, and we got seperated but Carl would love to say hi and get in touch to catch up and say all is well.

We were with my 89 year old mother-in-law yesterday. She is in a Wendover nursing home and finds it hard to speak after having had several strokes but we eventually worked out that she was telling us she'd been born and lived as a child at 5A Moira Road, Eltham. Does anyone know if this house still exists? Presumably it was a big house divided into flats. Thankyou.

I found this website completely by accident and have enjoyed reading through it. I grew up in Mottingham, 70 beaconsfield Road SE9 to be exact but now live in Tupelo Mississippi. My name at the time was Diane Utting. I have many fond memories of Eltham and Mottingham and regret losing contact with the people I knew there in my childhood. If by chance anyone who used to know and remembers me please drop me an email I would love to touch base with you!
